The Main Cause For This Center Established :

* Children All Around Chow Kit And Kg. Baru Roam Aimlessly Without No Where To Go.
* The Three Center Are Provided As A Second Home To Them And It Is Safe From The Bad Influence Outdoors

NUR SALAM grew out of a day care centre, or Pusat Aktiviti Kanak-Kanak(PAKK) that was opened to serve the Chow Kit neighborhood in 2001 by the Malaysian Department of Welfare. Chow Kit is a low income area with a longstanding reputation for sex work, drug sales, and organized crime, as well as being a neighborhood of undocumented immigrants.
Most of the children are originally from Chow Kit, but there are also children who have come to the area from other parts of Malaysia, who may have been trafficked, or who may be refugees. Most children come from one-parent homes, and many are the children of sex workers and/or drug addicts. In addition, many of the children do not have documents such as birth certificates or identity cards; some are stateless and unable to attend regular schools.
Because the needs of Chow Kit were not adequately served by a centre open only from 10am to 5pm, two community members and a volunteer formed a partnership between PAKK Chow Kit and Yayasan Salam Malaysia. This collaboration allowed the centre to be open 24 hours every day, and to provide programs for all children in and around the Chow Kit area. The expanded centre, now known as Yayasan Chow Kit.

The KL Krash Pad is a teen and youth centre located in the capital city’s
Chow Kit area to meet the needs and rights of vulnerable and at-risk
inner-city adolescents and young people. The Centre offers teens and
youth with alternatives to risk behavior that may expose them to gangs,
violence, crime, substance abuse and the risk of HIV infection.
Activities at the Centre are designed to motivate, interest and inspire vulnerable and at-risk adolescents
and young people, and which engage their creative expression, while giving them skills for selfsufficiency. The Centre houses an onsite café, a mini-gym, library, computer lab and various art and music
projects, all focused on skills development and possible income generation. As adolescents and young
people start to participate in the Centre’s activities, the staff determines their literacy level, skills, and
interests in order to guide them to appropriate programs.
Some adolescents interested in vocational opportunities are given the option to work at the Centre’s café
or benefit from a possible internship placement. For those who need basic literacy and numeracy, home
school classes are provided. For school drop-outs, the “Back to School” course helps adolescents
complete their Form 5 and/or sit for their exams. Whenever possible, adolescents are placed back in
mainstream schools.
KL Krash Pad works in collaboration with the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development.

A centre is needed to care for the children too young for the activities at the original NUR SALAM children’s centre. The envisioned new centre will provide care and learning activities for children from infants to age 4. In conjunction with the centre will be a safehouse for young children who have been trafficked and/or whose parents cannot care for them.
